Carl M. Crothers, owner and president
Carl Crothers is the former vice president and executive editor of the Winston-Salem Journal, a nationally award-winning daily newspaper and digital news site serving Northwest North Carolina. Carl was editor of the Journal for the final 14 years of his 31-year newspaper career. He was also a reporter and served in various senior editing roles at The Tampa Tribune during the 1980s and early 1990s. He developed Media General Inc.’s first online news site, Tampa Bay Online, in 1994.
Carl is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, (B.S. Mass Communications). He was named VCU’s 1996 Virginius Dabney Distinguished Professor of Mass Communications. He has studied management and leadership at the Media Management Center at Northwestern University, the University of Richmond, the American Press Institute and the Center for Creative Leadership.
He was a long-time member of the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) and was a board member of the North Carolina Press Association from 2007 to 2010.
He is part of a broad network that includes media managers and executives (print, broadcast and online), journalists, educators, business leaders and public-relations specialists across North Carolina and the Southeast.
Carl is a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served during the Vietnam era. He and his wife, Donna, an investment analyst and writer, have two grown daughters.
